Environmental issues are a high priority for all. Current global challenges, poverty, food insecurity, climate change and biodiversity loss continue to persist as the primary environmental and social challenges faced by the global community. Environmental issues cut across every aspect from trade to IP to human rights. The five main environmental threats include the following:
- Biodiversity is the most complex and vital feature of our planet and is in danger due to the increase in global warming, pollution and deforestation.
- Water pollution is a serious concern for our environment, causing a huge financial strain, killing humans and marine life.
- Our forests are decreasing at an alarming rate, reducing our supply of oxygen. Deforestation is contributing around 15% of our greenhouse gas emissions.
- Pollution is one of the primary causes of many other environmental concerns. such as Global warming, carbon emission etc.
- According to a UN report, without ‘unprecedented changes’ in our actions and behaviour, our planet will suffer drastically from global warming in just 12 years.
We need to be ready and prepared to tackle the threats of climate change head on. Some governments and businesses have started adopting a ‘green’ agenda whilst promoting environmentally sound practices that reduce their overall carbon footprint. While some may argue that this is enough, the enormity of the problem demands that everyone participates toward conserving the environment.
